Christmas Is Calling

Winston’s bright, unmistakable piano touch is the high mountain stream these songs flow on. Don’t get the idea from the album title that these are strictly holiday songs. These are winter songs, cozy and warm and hopeful.

Getting George Winston to play on your album is easier than you think.
And harder.
Tim Nordstrom, a fifth-generation Red Lodge resident and partner in the popular Montana Tunesmith duo, simply sent the famous pianist one of his early CDs.
Winston, a Miles City native may have a soft spot for Montana artists, but he doesn’t just play for everyone who asks.
Still, he could tell Nordstrom was a pro, and here they are together.
Winston’s bright, unmistakable piano touch is the high mountain stream these songs flow on. Nordstrom’s clear baritone, blended here and there with his brother Mike’s voice, lifts these songs to folky glory.
“Full Moon on the Missions” also features Winston, this time on harmonica, and he cuts loose a little on the too-short “Jack of Diamonds.” Winston solos on piano, at times plucking the strings, in the spare, contemplative “Solace.”
Don’t get the idea from the album title that these are strictly holiday songs. These are winter songs, cozy and warm and hopeful. And they’re pure Montana.
Nordstrom’s 13-year-old daughter, Abbie, makes her recording debut, singing lead on “Christmas Is Calling,” one of the album’s nine originals and one of the finest tracks. Abbie’s sweet, modest voice is just perfect for this hymn-like song.
